Know your tyres – comparing light truck tyres with other classifications

Let’s first discuss what the tyres are saying so you know when you look at your light-truck pack what it is written.

Initially, you need to look if it says somewhere LT, that must be the first thing written on them. It stands of course for ‘Light Truck’. As well since the vans and trucks carry a bigger load, look out for something that looks like that – ‘120 110S’

110 – That is the load index and it means those tyres can carry 1250 kilograms. It is best not to go over them because the tyres will start losing traction and grip while you are going to lose control. As well it will wear them out quite quickly.

S – That is the speed index. 'S' in that case is equal to about 180km/h. It is not advisable to go over them because once again it will wear out the tyres while they will start losing traction and grip.

That figured out let’s get to the main point.

What is the difference between light truck tyres and passenger tyres

Light truck tyres are made to carry a bigger load than the average tyres. The best light truck tyres usually are able to carry larger trucks and up to a ton vehicle plus heavier load. They are more durable as well because they are designed with a material that is way thicker than the average passenger tyres. While they are able to carry bigger loads it is important to note that in order for them to have that they have a sidewall that is not absorbing vibration, bumps, and is making a bigger noise. The reason for that is because light truck tyres are stiffer than the passenger tyres. They are good for on paved and regular road but are best when it comes to going off-road. Keep in mind because of those qualities they have they are a bit more expensive.

Passenger tyres, on the other hand, are great for having a comfortable ride on an on-road. They provide you with a smoother ride without noise or vibrations. As well they are less expensive when it comes to money so indeed they are a nice option. Meanwhile, it needs to be noted that those tyres are not able to carry heavy loads or being driven on rocky or sandy roads. They don’t have the necessary qualities for traction neither are made hard enough to sustain those terrains.
